Last February I had a chance to do some quick but highly efficient record shopping in London. Among the stops was Sounds of the Universe, the Soho store run by Soul Jazz Records. In addition to all the vinyl, the shop offers a pretty keenly curated collection of DVDs, books and other stuff that you’d expect from a reissue label with great taste.
In my younger years, Soul Jazz was an important gateway into a world of stuff I probably wouldn't have jumped on so eagerly otherwise, so SOTU was a long overdue destination. I left, fittingly, I think, with this 'Ironsides' comp, a typically reliable collection of Studio 1 roots reggae and rocksteady jams.
